Which Dehydrator and why

For a few years now I have had my eye on an Excalibur 9 tray dehydrator with timer and as part of my research I wondered whether any of you good ladies have experience of the same or similar products and wondered what you would recommend.  I know that they are pricey bit of kit, but I am looking for something that does what it says on the label.  Many years ago I had a cheapie it cost me £25 and the same machine is still on sale in Lakeland but for £50.00.  I am also considering the Excalibur becuase I can do a lot with it craftwise as well as on the food front.  Would love to hear your opinions on the same.

Many thanks

  1. I have an Excalibur 5 tray - and wish I had bought the 9 tray!

It is wonderful - does exactly what it promises and has been SO useful and yes I use it for flower petals and lots of herbs as well as drying tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, plums, apples, pears etc etc .

A little bit noisy - but not excessively so.

I have various posts on my blog about it and lots of pictures if you want to have a look.

Also very good for drying out jars and bottles after washing before putting away ! And proving bread, warming yoghurt and also has been used to revive cold chicks

  2. Hi Compostwoman. Sounds as though it is exactly what I want as I have a lot of herbs in the herb border and I tend to dry them off the hook on one of my Welsh Dressers at the moment and I am keen to do fruit etc as well. I will pop over and have a look. Haven't any chickens yet but on the list.

    Thank you

  3. I didn't know that domestic dehydrators even existed in the UK until I started to read blogs! One US one I follow often mentioned using one so I had a look around on the internet to find out more. I'd like one too, but wonder if would have enough use out of it to warrant the cost and of course storage space?
I hope you get one Trishia, as I am certain you would use it and benefit by it :o) Let us know if you do.

  4. Hi Rose

If you have a look at Compostwomans blog she does several articles in relation to the dehydrator. It is not as expensive to use as you may think. One of the things I am keen to do with the dehydrator is to dry any excess foods so that I don't waste a penny and also use it for craftwork such as salt dough and also making fruit leathers, dried pear slices, dried strawberries etc in which to make my own home made fruit muesli. There is a hell of lot you can do with them I am hoping that OH will treat me. Its something I have had my eye on for ages. I will let you know if I ever manage to acquire one.

Take care dear friend and look after yourself.
