Christmas lights and Decorations

Are beginning to appear all over Peterborough City Centre and indeed today is the evening celebrations for the lighting up of the same.

There are lots of shops in Peterborough but most of the big names are in what is known as the Queensgate Centre a massive covered shopping centre and when I ventured into town at the beginning of the week I was surprised to see the decorations up and I thought at first glance how simple and classy they were.  There are a set of corridors with three squares set around the Centre and different things appear in each square area.  This year the central square has a fairlyland Toy Castle in it which doubles as Santas Grotto.

When I went into town today to meet my friend for lunch on the way back I came back through the Centre and took the following photographs - sorry this post is photo heavy.

It has been a dismal misty rainy day here in Peterborough and I came in via Waitrose, through the car park and then over the covered walkway just off the Queensgate Roundabout.

This magnificent deer stands proud on one of the outer walls of the Centre.

As you enter the Centre you are met by this very large Christmas tree.

Looking back on my footsteps.

At this end of the Centre the decorations are more classical although they do blend in with the main event.

The first square that you come to is outside of the John Lewis store which is on three levels.  This when the Centre first opened used to be where the main event was.

There is however this irridiscent magical tree outside of the John Lewis store.

Looking along the balustrade towards the Primark store which is at the other end of the corridor which opens up into another square.

The decorations are simple this year although they are new.  For the past couple of years we have had the same decorations but with tweaks.  When the Centre first opened the decorations were fantastic.  However harder financial times led to restrictions.  At least they decorate the centre.

This photo is taken in the second square outside of the Primark store where the main event now seems to be held.  This year it is a toy castle with a backwards winding clock on the outside.  The Castle does double duty as it also is Santa's Grotto. The following photos are taken from different angles.

There are decorations outside of the Centre, the focus of tonight's switching on of the lights and will probably take some photos of this and post them up next week.  The above photos will expand some more if you wish to see a little further detail.

So the City Centre is starting to get into Festive mood.  However at this time of the year my favourite part is the Cathedral.  My favourite Cathedral has always been Lincoln.

I have not been to many Cathedrals, Lincoln, York, Exeter, Truro, Peterborough, but Peterborough is a close second.

Catherine/Katharine of Aragon was laid to rest here when it was just an Abbey without the status of Queen but referred to as the Dowager Princess of Wales being the widow of Prince Arthur, Henry VIII's older brother.  There is a beautiful area of the Cathedral which commemorates her grave with her symbol of the Pomegranate.  Further information here:

When I was at Junior School many moons ago we used to go to the Cathedral for the children's Christingle service.  It always used to be magical service.

It is a lovely Cathedral and in the summer months quite a few of us head out into the sunshine and go and eat our lunch on the grass outside of the Cathedral for some sunshine and peace and contemplation.  It is a lovely spot.

 Catch you soon.
