Porridge

No not doing time but porridge for Breakfast the one meal of a day that we should all have no matter what.  And what better way to start a cold autumn or winter morning than a bowl of steaming porridge, something that does not do you any harm, but is good solid food which keeps you going until lunch time.  You can add jam or fruit to this hot little number to vary the changes.  I am on about buying the porridge oats loose in a bag (at a cheaper price) I get mine from the Coop  currently £1.25 for 1kg (but you may be able to source them cheaper and all power to your elbow and your purse if you do) as they are cheaper than the well known Brand and because I make Flapjacks on a regular basis it is something that I always tend to have in the house anyway.  An ingredient that does double duty or more in my store cupboard is more than welcome and worth keeping in as it has earned its place.  Its also a very healthy ingredient although if you have a gluten intole...

Kitchen Whizzy Thing helps with breakfast

For a little while now I have had a gadget in my kitchen which I call my Kitchen Whizzy thing; this is what I used to make the smoothie we had for breakfast yesterday; it comes with a couple of different sized blades a cross blade which is like the blade in the bottom of a Kenwood Chef liquidiser and a flat blade which supposedly is good for whipping cream.  Needless to say I got the wrong blade in the bottom of the whizzy thing but it still made a very rich thick creamy chocolate mousse which we had for tea on Tuesday evening. I shall post the recipe up later in the week.  The official name for the Kitchen Whizzy thing is the Amazing bullet and it is ideal for just doing bits and bobs for the two of us. I have made another smoothie for tomorrow morning this time banana for OH.  I am having strawberry again as although I love bananas I have a food sensitivity to them which causes a lot of discomfort.  so its best to steer clear of them.  I have also made th...

Granola

Ever on the look out for something different for breakfast I have had a go at making some Granola for me to eat in the morning before dashing off to work and as as segment of the breakfast menu.  For starters half a grapefruit or an orange, a bowl of this granola finished with a slice/slices of toast with home made marmalade or jam and a cup of tea or coffee,. Absolutely delicious. The beauty of this type of recipe is that the ingredients can be changed to similar or alternative fruits/seeds and dried fruits especially if you are not keen on a particular ingredient.  It just adds your own twist to something that is easily made and tailored for your own use. Not only that you can make as little or as much as you want, to meet your family's needs or just individual needs.  The next question is how do you store this.  [I had an old sweetie jar that I used to keep the Granola in,but unfortunately the jar got broken just before Christmas.  So I am now on the hunt t...

Breakfast

Its a New Year and a fresh page in the book of life, so time to start to get into a fresh routine and in to the habit of eating breakfast (that is if you don't already).  I do  This is the one meal of the day you should really not miss - it literally is the meal to break the fast. Also after not eating for so many hours our blood sugar dips,  and we are in effect not firing on all pistons - and believe it or not that is when most car accidents happen - early in the morning. With me, it has been when I have historically been prone to epileptic attacks and that is why I am careful about always eating first thing in a morning.  Eating breakfast when you are on medication also gives a lining to your stomach so that the medication can work properly so it eases itself into your system gently. What do you and your family eat for breakfast just cereal or something more exotic like a fresh fruit salad with Croissants and preserves to follow or a slice of melon with ginger,...
