Better Late than Never

 Pickled Onions and Shallots.

Madness not getting them before, however I never came across any.  I lost the veg shop at the end of August and they were where I normally got my picklers and shallots from.  Madness I know in trying to do a few jars before Christmas.  However they are part of the cold cuts eating after the main event.

Managed to get a 10kg bag of pickling onions and a 4kg bag of Shallots very late in the day. Ordered off Ebay.  Picklers come from Cornwall; Shallots from a local farm.  Not cheap, but the Picklers worked out at £2.70 per kilo and you got free delivery.  The Shallots worked out at £4.50 a kilo.  Yet again no postage.

Now to get sat down, listening to the radio and peeling firstly Shallots and then some picklers to get them into brine.  May be a Sunday afternoon job.  Will see how it pans out.  If not Sunday it could be an afternoon at the beginning of the week.  Have the salt and have the vinegar and the jars.  The Picklers and the Shallots have arrived.  Excellent quality; they are bigger than I am used to though.  At least the Shallots break down a bit.

Nan's stool (my inherited shabby kitchen stool that my Nan peeled many a vegetable on in her kitchen) is in the storage unit and I am unable to access it mores the pity as it really is needed.  Will have to go and see if I can dig it out at some point.  It is an integral piece of preserving equipment despite the fact that it needs a new cushion and cover.

Right better roll my sleeves up and somehow or the other get stuck in today.

Have a lovely day.

Keep warm but most of all keep safe wherever you are.

Catch you soon.

    1. Hi BB, come up for a brief bit of air! I always soak in boiling water for at least half an hour before peeling as it helps with the crying! Me and onions do not get on as a rule in this respect but have found it does minimise it a lot. Hope you are snug as a bug despite these horrible storms. Promise will catch up soon Tricia xx

  2. You definitely need a stool for all that peeing! Haven't had pickled onions in years - my dad and I always loved them.

    1. Hi Margie, that stool was an institution in itself and I have very fond memories of my Nan on that stool; pulling her stockings up, or sat peeling runner beans, shallots or picklers and a multitude of other things besides. When she was working she always had a pinny/overall or apron on and her hair tucked under a scarf World War II style. All very not glamourous but very her and very down to earth! No room for pretence, something needed doing so it was done. Pickled Onions and Shallots are £4 odd for the picklers and nearer £5 for the Shallots for a small jar and much as we love them I would rather put the money to buy them in and then prep them myself. Long standing family tradition here as well. Cold Cuts over Christmas absolutely require them as do cheese and biscuits! Good simple fare that is very forgiving. Take care Tricia xx
