A Blue and White Platter Set and Brown Stone Server Ware and some existing pieces

I have over the years acquired and collected various things for my home.  I have a particular penchant for older vintage items, most notably my Great Grandmother's and my Nan's crockery the remains of which I have inherited.  The story behind this is that my Granddad (known as Pop) got himself a regular paper round and as a result of that decided to pay out for a proper full dinner service with Tureens, platters, ceramic ladles (all in the pattern of the service) for his Mum. From what he told me he paid into a weekly club to purchase it for her.  When my Great Gran passed the service came back to my Nan and Pop.  Nan used that service everyday for a good 45 years or so until the plates were spent.  The Tureens and the meat platters though were in excellent condition. Even though the plates are well had it with the constant use, I did retain them to keep with the good bits.  Not sure why but I did. That service is over 100 years old.  I have written about this before.

I am lucky enough to have many items though and some of them have a novelty value.  When I first moved in here some 37 years ago I started a collection of Brown Stone Server Ware and kitchen basics mostly made by Pearsons of Chesterfield, as well as flan dishes with recipes on and various other novelty bits and bobs and storage jars.  One of my most favourite finds was a complete Stone Cheese dome and plate and I went and dropped it!  A few choice words were had there.

Today I have added a few more pieces.  I paid £13.50 in total for the following items:

The first is a set of three platters made by Wedgwood of Etruria Design Baltimore.  It is a Blue and White square set which I thought would look lovely filled with pastries for the table for this coming Christmas.  The platters are well loved and used but still in reasonable condition which is what I ask for when looking for useful additions to my collection.  I have a thing about platters in any event.  They are so useful. These three graduated platters cost me £3 for the set of three.  Well chuffed with the find and the price.

I really am pleased with this as it will lovely on a properly laid table.  It is not perfect but it will do nicely.

I also came away with a white pie/flan dish decorated with embossed fruits which will go well with my M & S server-ware platters of a similar design which I have also collected quite a bit of as well as two very large Turkey Platters.   That cost me £1.

Also as I have said I collect the Brown Server ware and today I have managed to add the following pieces to my collection:

A small Souffle Dish; Cost £1

Three oval dishes;  Two of which cost £1.50 and the third £1

A terrine pan; Which cost £1

In total I spent £13.50 today, (there are a few other pieces not shown) but I am pleased with my acquisitions and have been able to extend my brown server ware collection that little bit more.

As a result of the finds I needed to be able to get them into one of the Pine Dressers in the dining room.  I therefore turfed the bottom cabinet/sideboard out, gave it a good clean up, and then re-organised the contents. I am looking forward to the day when I will have my dream kitchen and be able to display said items properly. Here are some of the contents:

One always needs an individual tea-pot.  This one is mine as G does not do tea leaves!

Two soup bowls that came from my childhood.  Mum had them and I inherited and they go very nicely with the rest of the stoneware.  There are about 8 bowls if I remember correctly.

A Pizza Plate.  Only found one but I believe there are about four!

This stoneware Pie/Fruit Crumble dish was bought off the China Store at Peterborough Market (now no more) when I was 19 and just about to be married.  It has been with me ever since.

A Chicken Brick.  Love this as it cooks the most wonderful tender chicken.  You have to soak the brick in cold water for at least an hour before using.

A Potato Baker.  I have had this a few years as well.  I believe I bought it from Timothy Whites (before they merged with Boots the Chemist).  Always had nice homeware.

Several Flan dishes three stoneware ones and a glass Pyrex style one.

A proper stone pie dish.  Cannot remember where this one came from.  I have however also used it to make egg custard!

Only one photo here but I have a set of two casserole dishes a medium sized one and a larger one.

A Terracotta Shortbread Dish.  Love this one and the detail in the imagery.  Flea Market find if I remember correctly.

A partial look into the tidied cupboard.

A Smaller cheese dome and platter.  I like this one.

There is a lot more but slightly different so may well post them on another day.  At least getting to sort things out at long last.

A lot of the items I have, have a story as well.  Perhaps like the dinner service my Pop bought initially for his Mum, every so often will tell you a story about an item and a chance to pass their stories on.

Hope everyone has a lovely day.

Keep safe and keep warm.

Catch you soon.

  1. What a lovely story and you certainly did well in your purchases! My grandmother had two big walk-in cupboards lined with shelves in her kitchen and one contained all her dishes, serving ware etc. and I would have loved something like that so they could all be seen at a glance! I have a particular weakness for different sets of dishes and coloured glassware.

Having a massive cooking day here at the moment - kitchen is a mess but lots of food is being made - both for the week ahead and for the freezer. Hope that storm that hit the UK didn't cause you any damage.
