The Roasted Peanut Jar

At my grandparent's home used to sit beside the fire in a simple lidded jar (a recycled Horlicks jar) which was unassuming and inconspicuous.  My grandfather was a skilled Fitter/Engineer in real life but in personality he was simple soul in that he did not crave attention or indeed like too much fuss.  I think I take after him in that respect.  My grandparent's were honest country folk who worked hard all of their lives.  They were land rich but cash poor and had to grow the majority of their food on the land which they cared for but they were oh so very rich in many other ways. A trip to the market in Lincoln took place every Saturday to top up on those items they could not make or produce themselves.  One of the treats that my "Pop" used to allow himself was a quarter of salted peanuts which were wood smoked and off one of the market stalls.  They used to be decanted into a white paper bag and when he used to get home he used to decant them into the...

First day in the New Year

When most of us are hopeful that this year will pan out better than last and that we all come through the journey safely.   Well I was up for the New Year celebrations seeing the New Year in on my own-some as usual.  The natives seem to have had their own firework displays down our street in their back gardens with the last one going off at about 2:00am.  I am not a fan of fireworks at all I am not fond of the loud bangs although they look very pretty and spectacular. The stew we had for late supper last night was very tasty and the frozen beef from Waitrose a real success.  There is about 1lb of beef for £3.99.  I used a deep old fashioned oval casserole dish filled to the top for this purpose and it seems to cook things very well.  So much so I am going to do some liver and onions next week in this pot which is firmly becoming one of my favourite cooking dishes.  It is the sort of pot that used to be used for making pate years ago....

Last day of December 2019

As we wait with baited breath and a slow countdown for the New Year to slowly slip in all going about our business and all doing different things. OH has been at work again today until he was released early by 15 minutes from work whereupon he came and collected me from Waitrose.  I knew he needed a hot meal and had decided to get some stewing steak to make a hot stew to have for a late supper.  They did not have any fresh and so I have bought a bag of their frozen which does not look too bad.  It was £3.99 for the bag and I have a stew veg bag for £1 (the veg shop is closed until Friday) as well which had carrots, swede and parsnip in. I have added an onion, seasoning and redcurrant jelly together with some stock. That is all bubbling away in a casserole in the cooker and we shall have that later on.  Good comfort food to hearten the body and the soul nothing fancy just simply cooked letting the ingredients flavour the meal without too many additions and lettin...

Sorry for being away and a little update

I have been away l onger than I had anticipated.  After being unwell the last time and having had two fits it left me feeling decidedly fuzzy and not firing on all pistons.  I apologise for being selfish and taking some time out but it was decidedly needed.  In retrospect, I think part of that was down to the job I had started.   To tell you the truth I was not sure that I was doing the right thing by accepting it in the first place but as I needed to work and we needed the pecuniary rewards I decided to give it a whirl.  Initially because it was something new I did enjoy it.  Unfortunately I did not get on particularly well with my Line Manager which did not help.  Who constantly told me to go to her if I needed to know something and yet when I did responded with irritation and treated me as an idiot.  That was off-putting to say the least as she was not friendly and slightly intimidating.  Not a very supportive Line Manager at all and if...

I am currently unwell again

After having suffered a couple of epileptic attacks in the past month after three years clear again I am a little down in the dumps.  Will try and get back to regular blogging again soon but at the moment I am resting and trying to recover which at the minute means less time on the computer.  Will post again as soon as I can. Hope everyone else is okay. Take care. Pattypan x
