Why is it that it takes mere seconds to mess things up

But takes hours and hours of effort to sort things out, clean and re-organise them?

Due to rain stopping play on the Ivy tugging, I have been in the house trying to sort things out a bit more.  Not easy but have to keep at it and in particular my kitchen and dining room needs the organisation more than anywhere else.

In  my kitchen I have no drawers at all.  Drawers in a kitchen are a must in my book but there has not been the capacity to provide for this so far as my kitchen is more of a scullery (indeed some peoples utility rooms are bigger than my kitchen). The kitchen is hardly big enough to swing a rat, but for the best part I make it work.  In any event, storage is a big issue and I often have equipment in other rooms as a result.  At the moment I am trying to re-organise things that are more commonly used easily to hand with more specialist bits packed in boxes but still easily accessible  which in itself is a WIP..

In desperation I decided to buy a couple of drawer cabinets in plastic or whatever it is to put my hand tools into and this has up until this point been resident in the dining room.

This is the type of drawers I am on about:

However, things are about to change.  With the failure of the fridges (Indesit - will not be buying them again) I am going to need more room to cater for the replacements.  The dining room needs decorating as well.  I have decided to go for an Anaglypta relief paper and then will paint over it to clean things up.  Not investing in expensive paper as this room is a walk through and often gets used as a putting down place so plain and simple will be the order of the day.  So although I have the garden as WIP, I am lining up the next projects to do as well.  The kitchen needs doing out as well and organising better - some has already been done but still a lot more to do.  We also need new flooring in both the dining room and the kitchen.

Anyway, as usual I have strayed from what I was talking about i.e. the drawers.

Last night I removed the drawers from the dining room, stripped them out, washed them all out, dried them down and popped them into the kitchen.  It is tight as they are now in situ near the bathroom door next to the washing machine and although space is tight you don't quite have to limbo through. As indicated above, I had removed the contents of the drawers and now I am washing everything down and re-organising as I go along.  Probably will not be the final sort but it will do to start with.  So a lot of effort has gone in, but it will be worth it in the long run when I get to the end of the projects.  Keeping myself motivated in this fashion often means I am juggling many plates, but it does seem to work in the long term overall - otherwise I tend to lose motivation.  I have to be plotting and planning.  But best of all on this occasion, I am at long last going to have my hand tools easily to hand when I am working in the kitchen.

Now am off to finish on washing up the rest of them.

Catch you soon.

  1. I agree drawers are a must in a kitchen. I have a deep drawer for pans but would like some shallow drawers for bits and bobs and tea towels,
If I remember correctly you rent your house, wouldn't the landlord do some work for you like the flooring etc.

  2. Hello Unknown, Lovely to hear from you. They haven't in 30+ years despite various requests over the years to the relevant parties representatives. Circumstances dictate that we have to live here in any event for the time being and not necessarily by choice. We do decorating etc. We just make the best of the situation we are in like lots of other people do. I am just doing something about it more for my own comfort than anything else without spending a fortune in the process and to keep it clean and tidy for everyday living. Its a means to an end at the end of the day and you have to deal with the hand that life presents to you. Kind regards Pattypan x

  4. Hi Kathy, that is okay and thank you for your lovely comments. I don't believe in feeling sorry for myself for long and just deal with what is at the time it happens. My normality could be someone else's paradise and I am grateful for what I have. I just try and make the best of everything that comes my way. I get a lot of pleasure from gardening, another hobby to add to the long list but the most pleasure from growing stuff from scratch. Sometimes it is really hard work, but I don't give in gracefully and I do set myself some targets. I hope you are keeping well and safe especially in the current circumstances. Please take care xx Tricia xx
