Food Matters Part Two - A Little Shopping
This week we are awaiting a delivery of some Proper Cornish Pasties from the Proper Cornish Pasty Company. For Saturday night's tea we had Cornish Pasties - turns out it was the second but last batch of the pasties I have in the Freezer. We bought the first batch last year. Both of us whilst eating our tea decided that they were too good not to have in-house as they are ideal if you want something to eat on the run as it were, especially in the colder months where more often or not you want something warm and substantial but not necessarily masses of it. We therefore decided to place a repeat order for large pasties x 8 accompanied by some sausage rolls. Same order as we placed last time. They should arrive sometime on Tuesday this week.
G also went to the Butcher and came back with several items some of which have gone into the freezer and some of which we will be eating during the week.
He came back with a Mint and Rosemary Lamb tray bake, sweet and sticky Pickle Beef Melts (does not have any Jerk seasoning in or chilli in thank goodness as I cannot cope with it. Loved the food but when it is getting constantly hotter in your mouth it takes away the enjoyment of the item being eaten. The Venison Melts it turns out that they had Jerky seasoning in them and the definition of mild seems to differ from person to person where chilli is involved. That was a right b........ for me as although I like a little chilli in food it has to be its mildest offering. I was quite disgruntled about the Venison Melt which I was really rich and I was enjoying this and the Sweet Chilli versions as they were so nice except for the heat of the chilli! I am just sensitive I guess. Just wish the farm offered options without the chilli because these melts really are lovely otherwise.
The Kitty B Sausages from Moor Farm which is where he went are really good and he also bought a load more of them. For the time being I have kept them out of the freezer but some will find their way in a little later in the day and I will keep some out for breakfast for G. I cannot reiterate how much I love having the Freezer again. The only issue now is that I am limited. This Samsung Freezer is brilliant however I tend to go for a Chest Freezer for bulk storage and for making things on a batch cook basis.
G has also bought a Venison Pie, and a Steak and Ale Pie. I love my pies G is not keen but it is a good and substantial way of feeding a family reasonably cheaply especially if you serve with plenty of veggies and perhaps some stuffing and a Yorkshire pudding or two. Making it yourself and making a larger pie will probably mean you can feed the family for two good substantial meals for a family of four. If you have a freezer and only intend to eat half now freeze the rest for another day. You can re-freeze if the item has been cooked in between and you then just heat through to warm up in readiness for eating. Both the pies are in the freezer.
Four Angus Beef Burgers and a Chicken are also in the freezer for another day. A small pot of Honeycomb ice cream has also joined them and been tucked away.
I have kept out the Traybake, the Rib Eye Steaks, and the sweet and sticky Pickle Beef Melt out for eating this week. They will therefore feature in the outline menu for this week, together with some items still remaining in the fridge and also some existing items from the freezer, together with fresh items (I need to go for fresh veggies and a few other items as yet) which is looking at the moment as though it is going to be later on in the week as of today. I also need some items for the Pantry shelf to top up. I am always glad to be able to have a well-stocked food arsenal i.e. the Pantry to give me a little bit more creative scope when it comes to cooking.
There are plans to do a little preserving this week on the cards as well but they will be covered in a separate post, however primarily marmalade making.
What was left from the stuffing I made was also frozen into thick slices. They will prove useful additions to a pork chop, or pork slice as an accompaniment on a future date. There are two meals worth here. So even though it is a little bit of stuffing, it can prove its worth in giving extra flavour, texture and interest to a meal.
I also have a couple of Tiger loaves to turn into breadcrumbs and a bread and butter pudding. Not had one of these for quite sometime and am therefore looking forward to this. I also intend to turn some of the crumb into some Bread Sauce to keep in the freezer as well as it is always a good accompaniment for chicken. It is worth making this in bulk.
So lots to do as usual. To keep me out of mischief or get me into it.
Outline Meal Plan will follow later on.
Have a lovely evening and keep warm. Bit nippy here.
Catch you soon.
