A Few Charity Shop Finds - Part Two
Part Two
Well it is a couple of weeks since I have been able to get to the CS. I nipped in today quickly and managed to get a small basket and glass compote stand (I think that is what it is called) as it dips in the middle whereas a cake stand is predominantly flat) in a ribbed design. Both items were £2. Very pleased with these.
It is often the little bits that are the most useful. Hopefully will get a chance to nip in tomorrow. Saturday seems to find the shop with different bits and bobs to what it has normally during the week and you often find the Manager doing up individual pieces as they need it. He is good at it and has a particular interest in restoring pieces that come into the shop to show them at their best. The shop prices are not expensive for the best part.
Well I managed to get 20 minutes in the shop on Saturday in which I managed to buy a new Chestnut Pan for £2.50. It can also be used on a Barbecue. I have had one of these previously and it lasted a lot of years. It is ideal for toasting Chestnuts which is a tradition around here in the run up to Christmas and over Christmas. There are also lots of goodies they can be used for.
I also purchased a small but well proportioned occasional table which has a beautiful shape to it and which I think is from about 1950s! I may be wrong. It is a beautiful colour overal. The legs are ornately bowed, l however I think one of the legs has been exposed to sunlight. Only cost me £15. This is why I love going into Charity shops. Something preloved still has a story to tell and is often full of character. The table has now arrived here at the house. G is fishing tomorrow and so will get it installed then.
This is the top of the table. Will show the legs later.
I have also managed to find two different height cake stands and also a compote dish. The two cake stands will do nicely for some candle decorations for Christmas and the Compote dish will be good for serving fruit and cream up on the table or indeed some of my homemade Rumptopf with some cream.
I did mention the other day that I have to go through into the bedroom in any event, as I need to sort out my jewellery chest which houses the greater part of my costume jewellery. I will be covering my costume jewellery collection in another post. There is not enough storage for all of it at the present. In an attempt to create storage and show off the jewellery I am going to look out for a very large frame which I can build up (like a shadow box); probably put a pretty fabric and some wadding to pretty it up and then place strategically placed hooks to hold necklaces. This will go inside my bedroom cupboard (previously the old airing cupboard) which I now use as a small walk in wardrobe and will be placed on the wall. I already have several boxes which I use for storing my costume jewellery earrings in which are colour coordinated.
A while back there was a most beautiful re-upholstered corner chair which had been re-holstered in quite a bold contempary fabric. It was a gorgeous Ercol Ash framed chair which had been re-upholstered with a very good quality contemporary fabric and something that I would have bought. In any event it was already sold by the time I got to see it. Some you win and some you loose.
I like Ercol furniture for the best part. About 8 years ago I bought in an Ercol Ash Three tier Tea Trolley for about £50 which was a very good price even then. More likely to fetch upward of £100 plus in today's market from the pricing I have seen so far. I intend to keep mine though. My Aunty had the complete set of the Ercol Ash from new in the 1960's including a settee and armchair and plate rack and sideboard as well as the table and chairs.
Lastly, I mentioned inherited items earlier in this post. I inherited what remained of my Nan's Wedding China tea set. China seems to be something that has been gifted for Weddings or special birthdays through the years. My Nan in turn when my Mum turned 21 in the 1950's bought her a 6 place tea service with side-plates. It is a Colclough set. It is also a design that is not seen very often. I in turn when Mum passed received this tea set. It was in perfect condition when I received it. Unfortunately there has been an accident and a couple of cups and plates have been chipped which I was really upset about. Yes it is only China, but it holds so many memories. I have therefore been looking out for some replacements as I really do love this beautiful set. I have found a part set which includes one cup and saucer and a few plates which will go someway to rebuilding the set I have. This is the pictured below. It is not my photo but from the Ebay listing. It was advertised as being a 1980's - 1989 pattern. It is from the 1950's - I think it was purchased in 1956/1957 by my Nan. Hopefully should received this during the week. This has since been received and it is in excellent condition. The Seller on Ebay has provided a fantastic part tea service in excellent condition. The packing though was immaculate. Really well done and the delicate China very well protected. Very impressed with the whole service.
Hopefully will find some more in due course.
Equally, when I turned 21, my Nan bought me a lovely little Tea set with Daisies on. This is Gainsborough China though. Equally you do not see this design very often either. My Nan seems to have had a knack for finding individual pieces. I am looking to add to this as well as yet again a casualty of the box that fell. It does upset me when things that are precious too me get damaged. Will see what I can locate.
A bit cheeky I know, but if any of you ever come across these designs may I ask if you could let me know as I would like to add to both pieces if I can.
Catch you soon.

I will try and remember those designs to look out for you. Car boot sales in your area probably a good place to look, or else the big Antiques fair at Newark, now the last Peterborough one's been held (building houses on the showground I believe). Or visit Chinasearch, or Chinamatchers, online.
ReplyDeleteThe table you bought has had the French polish stripped off it so it's back to the original wood now. Looks a nice colour.
Excellent buys!
