Homemade Christmas - Simple things to make for the Christmas tree

I think the majority of us love Christmas although there are the odd one or two bah humbugs amongst us but I suspect that is more to do with a commercialised Christmas than a more honest home made Christmas.  Each year I try to do something a little more on this front.  This year I have found a simple garland or garlands for the Christmas tree that use up something I have had stuck in tins for what is now three generations.  I am talking of the button box.  I have my Nan's tin, my mum's tin and of course my own.  I have always been taught from an early age to cut off buttons that are to go in the rag bag or to the rag and bone man when he used to come around in my youth.  So as far as I am concerned this is a super way to use them up and possibly be making an heirloom in the making.  I have also seen various other ornaments/decorations which I want to have a go at this year but I will talk about them at another time and am first dealing with simpler ornaments.

I happened to be perusing Pinterest through some of the posts I had popped up to have another look at when I discovered this simple button garland from the link here Simple Button Garland on Diane Henklers Blog.  In the interests of economy, and recycling I think this would be a super little project for a child to undertake albeit with guidance and supervision on the needle front.  It is also very forgiving as the buttons do not have to match.  The following is not my photo

I also found this little button wreath as well which I also think is worth taking the time for making. Such little home made decorations set off the tree beautifully and will hold memories for years to come.

The instructions for the wreath are here:

Button Wreath.  They come from a blog called Crafty Chix.  Yet again the photo is not mine and it comes from the Crafty Chix blog.  What a super project.

But my do they not look lovely.  So I shall be starting my versions over the next few days.  The wreath uses a base of some sort and a glue gun so it will be an ideal project to slip in amongst all those other items on my agenda at the moment.  Proper vintage little trims that will add an element of simplicity to the Christmas tree this year.  Now all I have to do is locate the button tins/boxes which might be easier said than done.

Watch this space.

Catch you soon.
