Something for the Tins - Apple Scone Round
This is a favourite here and it is either made as individual scones or as I tend to do make a big scone cake, slice and simply serve it with butter. It is also good to nibble on when you want a snack. It is something that I have made for many years.
You will need:
8oz plain flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons of baking powder
2oz margarine
2oz caster sugar
1 medium sized cooking apple which has been peeled, cored and grated
4 tablespoons of milk
For glazing:
A little milk
1 tablespoon of Demerara Sugar
Cooking time approximately 20 to 25 minutes
Oven temperature: 200 degrees C, 400 degrees F, or Gas Mark 6
To Make:
Pass through a sieve into a bowl the flour, salt and the baking powder. Then rub in the margarine until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Add the sugar and then the grated apple and enough milk to give a soft dough. Be careful as you do not want a "sticky dough".
Turn out the mixture onto a floured board and knead lightly.
With a rolling pin roll out the mixture to an 8 inch circle and place on a greased and floured baking sheet. You can score the top into 8 pieces if you wish. If you do this you can serve it in wedges. However, I leave it plain. Brush the top with a little milk and sprinkle with the sugar.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in a medium hot oven (as per temperatures above) until the scone is well risen and a lovely golden brown. Take out of the oven and leave to cool It can be served after 10 minutes whilst still warm. However, I serve it in thin slices (the sizes are graduated) with plenty of butter. It keeps well in a cake tin for a few days, but rarely lasts that long here.
It is a nice easy one to make and is "something for the tins".
Catch you soon.

sounds lush, I would have to make individual ones or Michael would have a third with half a pound of butter.
