Today

Saturday started early with the alarm going off and then me nabbing an extra 15 minutes.  Then it was up, getting ready and then going off heading towards Ramsey for the Fishmonger.  It started off bright and sunny, but decidedly colder than it has been.  Overcast for a while and looked as though it was going to rain but it has turned out for the best part to be a sunny day.  Autumn is well and truly with us though. We did call in at the Bakery on the way there and came away with some crusty buns and a couple of cakes.

We arrived at our destination and surveyed what goodies were on offer today.  I bought a naturally smoked haddock fillet to be chopped in two and for two separate meals.  I cook it in  milk with a Court Bouillion and then cook a couple of poached eggs on top (which are also cooked in the milk).  Cooking it this way makes it nice and tender and the poached egg white does not go everywhere.  Served on a plate with the eggs and some butter this is absolutely delicious.  We then bought a crab each, some crayfish tails, Cockles and OH had some Crevettes.  We will not be having fish for the next couple of weeks though as they will not be there.

Next door to the Fishmonger is a stall selling eggs and we buy regularly from there too.  Today we came away with a tray of small first lay eggs for daughter and a tray of larger eggs for ourselves.

After that we called at the Harvest Barn Farm shop on the way back and came back with quite a few goodies. A couple of fresh chickens from Grasmere Farm, some Bacon, fresh veggies off the farm including Courgettes, carrots, cabbage, sweetcorn cobs. We also found they had freezer meals so we are giving these a try.  OH has a stew and I have meatballs in tomato sauce (Concasse) made by Lodge Farm Kitchen.  So we shall see how we get on with these. We also bought some chutneys, mustard and jellies some different ones we have not had before which will go into the Christmas Pantry store.

So today has been a foodie kind of day for the best part.

On returning back to Peterborough, we called in to see daughter and the grandkids and then called in to see son as well before getting back home. We had a seafood fest for lunch and  I have since been packing away the food items and sorting out some other bits and bobs as well.  I have some more vinegars to prepare and flavoured butters for the freezer a little later on.  That should keep me out of mischief.

Hope you have had a good day too.

Take care, keep safe.

  1. I have not had smoked haddock for a long long time, Mum use to poach it in milk too, with bread and butter yum. Enjoy.
Getting cooler here too, Autumn is in the air.
