A bit of a disappointing day
Yesterday we had made our minds up that we were going out for the day today whether it was rain or not. I asked to go to Mevagissey, a favourite place to go (and after checking local forecasts the weather on paper at least looked as though it was going to be miles better). So after some chuntering OH agreed despite the fact that it was nearly a three hour drive there and back.
So up we get bright and early. The morning started off clear no mist today and this despite more rain last year. However the river on the site is now well down to what it was although further up the valley it is still quite high.
So off we pottled with OH putting his trust in the Sat Nat Gods again. Again we were taken cross country up little tiny pony and track roads with moss growing up the centre, roads or tracks being in terrible condition safety wise with lots of pot holes, most of it uphill with hardly any passing places. OH gets quite stressed by this and I get stressed knowing he is not a happy bunny. However on thinking things through I think it is very much down to the geography of the area and using what roads are about. There are lots of little hamlets of villages up in them there hills roundabout here. Needless to say lots of lovely places again the sort of places I would not mind living as they are so quiet and rural and peaceful away from the rat race. I don't think himself is enthused though. I would really love it.
We eventually reached going cross country the A30 to Okehampton went by what I think are known as the Nearly there trees which I had not seen before and then on towards Launceston then over Bodmin Moor which at the time of going over we were in a middle of a rain storm. Then on to St Austell via Bugle (Eden Project on this road) and then on to London Apprentice, Pentewan Sands and then on to the outskirts of Mevagissey itself where we were stopped in our tracks by a Police van with no entrance signs up all over the road. So we tried going down a side road, got part way down and met a chap in front of us with a bit of a situation in front of him. He had two cars coming the other way, both of them ladies who refused to reverse their cars back the way they came despite there being more passing places down there. As a result we had to reverse back and came out, tried a different route and it bought us back to exactly the same place. So despite all the miles and with us both looking forward to having a good look around Mevagissey our jaunt was brought to a sudden and disappointing holt. By the time we got sorted it was too late really to do much else but come back the way we did.
Putting a positive slant on things, we did have a nice ride out - yes some of it stressful but perhaps we have seen places that a lot of people do not get to see.
We eventually got back to Dulverton for 5pm. Both of us were tired and so we popped to the local fish and chip shop and that is what we had for tea. It was nice and hot and went down well.
I was curious to find out why we could not access Mevagissey and so went on the Internet. It turns out that there was a major crash at approximately 9:45am with two cars, which is why the road had been closed. From what I understand, two people were air flown to Derriford Hospital at Plymouth. So I hope they are both comfortable and now on the road to recovery.
Not sure if we are going anywhere tomorrow himself is a bit shattered. If we do it might be somewhere a little more local.
River still down which we are pleased about.
Catch you soon.
Take care.

There should be a way of setting the satnav to show either quickest route, or to avoid B roads etc. The first time I used a satnav I ended up on a gated road in the pouring rain but then I was told how to set it.
ReplyDeleteOh what a shame. Next time perhaps (on a site a bit nearer?) Those wee lanes are nerve-wracking when there aren't many passing places and you have to back up for 100s of yards sometimes. Enjoy your day off today.
