Today

Last night we had torrential rain for over two hours.  Woke up this morning and we had received as much snowfall as we had yesterday.  Only difference is today has been perishingly cold.  Even though I had a top, a jumper, a sweatshirt and then my old joggy-bottoms on, topped by a thick coat I wrapped myself up like "Nanook of the North".   My first venture outside for the first time in about a week and went over to the Veg shop to see what they had; just as a top up really to cover us over the weekend and for a few days next week before I go and stock up again.  I get very twitchy if I do not have things like eggs, milk, onions, potatoes with a selection of veg to go at as you can  make so much out of it and get a meal sorted with next to nothing, even vegetarian style if the pennies are few and far between.

I came back with a seasonal treat, Sprouting Purple Broccoli, a broccoli head, a cauliflower, a melon, two lots of apples, and some leeks.  They did not have as much in today as they normally have, enough, but not quite the choice that they normally manage to sustain.

With all this bad weather we have had, any blossom on fruit trees may well have affected the blossom, which will lead to less fruit to crop.

I ended up going to the Co-Op to see what they had; they did not have hardly anything but I did manage to get a small sweetheart cabbage, some parsnips, and some carrots.

So overall enough for a few days or so.

Tea tonight has been a roasted chicken, served with carrots, peas, mashed potato, steamed buttered purple sprouting broccoli with lots of gravy.  It has gone down very nicely indeed.  Very yummy I did enjoy it.

Short and sweet tonight friends.  Am off to do a little more knitting.

Catch you soon.

  1. I am always impressed with the number of veggies you serve with dinner!!!! I must improve on that. So much healthier. And it looks delicious too. Wendy

    1. Hi Wendy, I was bought up eating a lot of veggies, which we think do an awful lot of good. We have good meat, but if it goes up too high in price we are quite prepared to have less better quality meat as a result. However, you always need your veggies. In hard times they also help pad a meal out and so much more can be done with them these days which provide good eating, although not necessarily the meal you fancy. Things such as soups, quiche, using leftover veg and making Bubble n Squeak, Colcannon, sauces stir fries etc. It is only really with the main meal of the week i.e. a roast mostly had on a Sunday, but not always that we have more veg but I always make sure we have about three veggies during the week. Tonight for example we are having a Toad in the Hole, with mashed potato and steamed finely shredded cabbage with gravy. Simple good eating which is very tasty and sustaining. Veggies are good for you although I am not a Vegetarian. Everything has to be balanced. x
