Progress in the Kitchen Part 2

Sunday

I have been in the kitchen today and managed to get a lot of stuff done.  However, still not enough to complete it and because the kitchen is a "busy room", I am intent on getting it done and dusted as best as I can before I even go into the Pantry again.  In reality I am about halfway along the kitchen having done loads of washing and wiping down as I go, as well as the constant washing pile and having to feed the big hungry monster to get things lovely and clean.  Sometimes it seems never-ending.

In reality, rather than doing the kitchen, I would rather be sorting things in the Pantry. Realistically though, dealing with the kitchen first is the best way to deal with things overall.

Monday

Another busy day.  Still slow going.  Have got all the tea-towels washed up and the dishcloths, so can now get on with the huge pile of washing up.

Still one tranche of sorting to do in the kitchen, and then should be able to scrub it out properly.  I did get the worktop all cleaned and sorted out today though so chuffed about that.  About three cupboards to sort out tomorrow and then get stuff back into the cupboards.

Also managed to get the new supplies on stock, cornflour, arrowroot, stock-pots, that sort of thing back into the cupboard.  There are still a few more things that are needed though.  I try and build up quite a little supply for stock and things like that with the canning using what I have, but there are also a couple of commercially available ones that I like as well.  I tend to only buy these though when they are on offer.

I do have a major job to do on the cooker.  I also need to touch a couple of small chips on the enamel out as well once it is all scrubbed. I have some heat proof enamel paint to touch it up with.

I am miles behind and beginning to fret a little bit, but if I keep at things it will all pull together in the end.

I did not cook for tea tonight - well G had a Welsh Rarebit and toast and I chose just to have a couple of crumpets.  I have recently obtained some metal rings and intend to have a go at making my own in the not too distant future.

Nipped to the shop and found a few more reductions as well as being in date until the end of January 2025.  Have come away with two packs of Meringue bases and two packs of mini swiss rolls chocolate covered for the Christmas stash so quite pleased about that.  I will make a couple of sweet "Flan" bases for Christmas as they will keep for a few days in a tin in the Pantry and then with fruit and jelly and a little cream a quick pudding can be created.  Must make a note for my list.  The greatest bargain though came on some Cotes de Rhone wine.  It was Ā£6.50 a bottle.  I managed to get it today for Ā£3.50 a bottle and so four bottles have come home with me today.  Some of it is to be used in homemade Vin d'Orange. Yum.

I have also added a new cookbook to my collection of books today.  Nigel Slaters the Christmas Chronicles.  managed to get a good second hand copy which is immaculate.  Some lovely recipes in there including Prune and Golden Raisin Muscatel tipple.  Shout out to Tracy of Our Smallholding Adventure  a good friend, who used a recipe from the book on her latest You Tube Video link is here:

In another universe:

I have also been adding a few bits to my crafting stash; some more embroidery and cross stitch kits and also cutting dies for paper crafting a lot for Christmas and some for autumn next year.  I am looking forward to having a play with these soon as well.  One of the kits I have invested in is a set of eight heart shaped tree decorations with a little something related to Christmas on each one.  I am looking forward to working these in due course. They are fully embroidered work and not cross-stitch which the other kits are. Thus far I am very impressed with what you get for your money all the fabrics, embroidery thread and wadding for each little heart with very detailed instructions for each one.  Some of the designs have given me some other ideas as well.

Well am off to potter.  Not sure I will get a post in for tomorrow will see how it goes.  If not tomorrow will be the day after.

Have a lovely evening, keep safe and warm.

Catch you soon.

  1. You are making good progress. Thank you for the video link - I will have a look at it later. I have managed to add to the Christmas stash - fancy chocolate biscuits (tins on sale at local shop) - German Christmas Stollen - box of Quality street (on sale this week at another shop I just popped into - $7 off what I have seen it for (chocolate has risen in price astronomically) - I suspect this will be the one and only tin I buy this year!
Soaked raisin and currants before going to bed last night and got up early this morning to add all the other ingredients and get two large loaves of Christmas fruit loaf into the oven - house smells wonderful! I will wrap them in tea towels and leave them to cool while off to work this afternoon. We seem to be getting our first snow flurries of the year just starting and it is just barely above freezing so Winter is well and truly here!

    1. Hi Margie, my friend Tracy's You Tube and Blog and she is on Instagram is well worth a look. Glad you have been able to add some fancy biscuits to your Christmas stash; Stollen is a favourite here too - am going to have a go at making some myself this year. Always Quality Street ours cost about Ā£3 a tin from Morrisons (reduced because of being a store member) also got some Roses too. Chocolate and sweets have been expensive here for quite a while so I tend to buy when there is an offer on stocking up and keeping some in a tin for "nibble" nights throughout any one month. Might make a few this year as well will see how it goes. Might be a "Down Tools" project for an evening. Turkish Delight is well worth making at home and works out a lot cheaper than in the shops. Home made fudge is good as well as homemade Cinder Toffee (Crunchies). We already had our first snow here; not much settled but since then we have had atrocious weather for the time of year and it has been a lot colder a lot quicker this year. Glad you have your Christmas fruit loaf sorted. Mine will probably be not this weekend but the following weekend so that it can stand in a tin in the Pantry for a few days to mature. Am still trying to get some further preserves on the Pantry shelves as well. You take care and keep warm and safe. Hugs Tricia xx
