China and Glass

As a result of sorting out the bottom of the Dresser the other day, I also found a load of china items, dinner crockery and glass ware. Now china and glassware are firm favourites around here and I have a lot of it.  Cake stands are brilliant used as tea light or candle stands and of course you can always pretty them up with foliage or fresh plant material.  The above dish was picked up from a CS for Ā£3.  The Lemon Meringue one below as Ā£1 and the M & S one Ā£1.50.  So all bargains.

This was a dish that I bought in the 70s when I got married.  It is I believe an Arcopal dish.  I also had the brown glass storage containers etc. which were very popular at the time.  Sadly I did not retain them however I have seen them online to buy.

This is a Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady Soup Tureen and is one of two together with decorated Ladles.  I found this in a CS for about Ā£5.  I also have 12 soup dishes to match and a couple of other pieces in the same design.  I have quite a collection of the Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady which I have collected in later life.  When I was first married and it was in fashion we could not afford to buy it as we were buying our own house.  However I have made up for it since.

A Scallop Platter that took my fancy.  CS find yet again Ā£2.

I had a couple of these leaf shaped dishes which came from M & S.  I bought from new but managed to break one!

You cannot see particularly clearly, however this is fish platter for serving a whole fish on.  I found this in a CS for Ā£2. I understand that there are also individual plates to go with this but so far have not managed to find any.  Maybe one day.

I think this is an Arcopal Glass Avocado dish.  I have a set of six; they are not a normal glass though more like a crystal and very heavy.  CS find again for about Ā£2.

The dish below was one of my Mum's.  She used to serve the sweeties in it at Christmas.  Very heavy bowl that is good for serving fruit in as well.

This was a CS find for Ā£5.  You cannot see from the photo but it has an amber stripe through it.  It is an M & S Bowl and cost me Ā£5.

This little Lotus bowl set I bought off of Ebay for about Ā£10.  It was perfect until G got carried away and did some washing up in the dishwasher, which ruined it.  He has since been told no old glass, knives or china in the dishwasher.  I still use it though.  It was bought as a Christmas table set but I use it for fruit on an everyday basis (when we have fruit that is).

These are my Nan's fruit dishes.  I believe she had a couple of large bowls to go with them but I do not have those.  They are a very heavy glass and look really pretty on a table.  We used to use these for tea when we used to go to my Nan and Pop's and it brings back happy memories. Nan also had a Carnival Glass set as well.  Not sure what happened to that but it was a lovely goldie peachy colour.

The bowl below I believe is a Brierley Crystal bowl.  CS find for Ā£5.  I also have five Champagne Coupes (there were six but one got broken in this pattern) which I really like.  Expensive tastes.

And finally, my mother-in-law's cake stand.  This photo does not really do it justice it is a beauty and quite high standing.  Looks gorgeous on a tea table.  Not sure where Mum got it from but it was treasured.  I know as a young lady she worked down in London as a Nippy in one of the Lyon's Coffee/Tea houses.  Whether this has any connection or not I do not know, but it is super.

I love to have a diverse range of serving dishes as I think they add their own charm and sometimes a different take on the dish being displayed.  Helps mix things up a bit and makes things look lovely.  They say we eat with our eyes first before tasting anything.  Just love lovely things.

Each to their own.

Catch you soon.

  1. You have some very pretty things there. I am guilty of using the same everyday bowls and forgetting about the pretty things pushed to the back of the cupboard.
