Sunday Sunday
It is now some 72 hours that we have had continuous rain for and the river is extremely high to what it was yesterday as well as the mill race behind us.
OH has been speaking to Tonya our host and as we had assumed they had done what they could yesterday by moving people from the riverside onto higher ground and putting other preparations in hand. They have never known it to flood where we are situated a little further up yes but not where we are which is a little comforting. However as we all know from history King Canute could not manage to control the sea, let alone a river. The water will go where it will go at the end of the day. Tonya has indicated that this particular valley is not under flood warnings at the moment (we are on the River Exe) but further up the valley round Porlock way (the place with the big hill we went to the other day) they have had quite a bit of flooding and further flood warnings have been circulated. We have been told that if a flood warning comes for us here, that they will come round and notify everyone. The river is over the bridge in the small village, but apparently no flooding to houses that we are aware of at the moment.
We have been watching the river from the caravan and the level of it from a tree alongside the river which is overhanging it and we have seen the river creeping up.
We have spent the day at the van again - better to be safe than sorry pottering about doing a bit of this and that. Most of the afternoon I have been cooking. We have a nice piece of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast parsnip, roast potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, peas and mashed potato with gravy for tea. We also have a black cherry pie I picked up from a farm shop the other day a large family side one. I forgot to get custard and so have ended up making it from scratch from eggs (gorgeous free range eggs), sugar, milk and cornflour. It tastes good and the colour is not too pale either. So the pie will follow for pudding once it has been warmed up. Unfortunately it became a bit of a casualty as I managed to drop the pie so it has a slight crack in it!
Tea went down very well and we have watched the newest version of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express with Kenneth Branagh in the key roll. A very different take on those I have seen before but still very well done. Have enjoyed it.
The river is raging, but at least it has not been raining for the last couple of hours. No constant tap tap tapping on the caravan roof. Hopefully the water will have cleared a bit more by morning.
Keep safe wherever you maybe.
Catch you soon.

Gosh, you must have an excellent cooker in the caravan to do a good Sunday roast in it. You have made me hungry now (I'm trying to put off eating breakfast so as to have as long as possible since my last meal. Trying to lose weight!)
ReplyDeleteIt's dry here today so I hope you have some drier weather too. The river will probably drop very quickly once the rain stops - ours does here. Hope you can get out and about today.
Hi BB, I am always cooking and the cooker is indeed quite a good one only thing with it is that the shelves are held in by a metal network rather than shelf grooves so you have to be careful with meat tins not being too big in depth and width to accommodate the joint. I have two small sized oblong cake pans that I use for roasties, Yorkie pudding etc. They do not usually go in though until the meat has been dealt with and then I keep the meat warm under the grill wrapped in foil. We also have a Microwave and full sized fridge and ice box in the van so it works well. Sorry to have made you hungry! Good luck with the weight loss - I find that if I try and diet that is when I put weight on! I walk around a lot and we eat well but even so am still careful. Weather has been a lot drier today although still wet and some periods of sunshine and blue sky. Hoping to go out somewhere tomorrow. Take things steady and glad you have found a house to go to. Take care sweetie Tricia xx
DeleteI hope you're staying safe and not too worried about the water levels. Keeping one eye open for the river to overflow can't make for a very comfortable holiday for either of you. We used to live near a major river and the fields behind us were a flood plain. We'd watch anxiously as the water rose and rose some years, but it never reached the house. It was a magnificent, but quite scary sight to look out of the upstairs windows at night and see a sea of black and silver glinting and flickering in the moonlight where your gardens used to be!
ReplyDeleteHello Fifitr, we are quite safe and not worried about the water now it is going down. It was when it was on the up all the time. Holiday has been very comfy in that we have a very good touring van which is ideal for the pair of us and with double glazing and central heating we can keep snug and warm. It has been an experience but we have been making the most of it. Here on the site at night you can hear the water but not necessarily see it but it is what it is. Tonight we can hear the pheasants clucking before they roost and settle down for the night. At least the rain has stopped to what it was. Hoping we can get out tomorrow. Take care Tricia x
