Grandma Knew Best

Saw this during my roaming on the Internet earlier.  As I was taught to cook by my Mum and also my Nan (by the way my Nan taught my Mum for the best part), I was taught a lot of these things early on and no doubt quite a few of you already do this.

I thought that maybe though that the younger generation may not know about these little hacks/shortcuts and thought I would share for the sake of completeness.  Hope it helps.  Just double click on the highlighted link below and then click on the written link to access.

  1. I taught myself to cook. My mother made a couple of things well, otherwise she resented cooking. My grandma lived with us and didn't cook in my mother's kitchen. Growing up in the 1950s we got introduced to processed food.

    1. We rarely had processed food -Dad's wage was not a lot and Mum stayed at home with us. We used to see my grandparents' regularly and we always came back stocked up with plenty of fruit and veggies as well as other stuff. I think I was lucky - this was early 1960s as I was born in 1959. I think my grandparents kept everyone going including other family members and also some of their friends. There were always plenty of preserves to hand as well as honey. My Nan did not waste much and there were always ways around things and everything used to get used up. Having gone through the War she was very precious about any kind of food and with good reason although living in the countryside they fared a little better than City folk. I got taught to cook as my Dad was determined that no daughter of his would not be able to cook by the time I got married. It was part of me earning my pocket money being in the kitchen with Mum, and then also doing my own ironing. Indeed I could cook a full roast meal and other things by the time I was 13. When I was 15 Mum was taken seriously ill and ended up being in Addenbrookes Hospital for three months. We had no outside help I was going to school, getting home and looking after my brother who I fed and made sure he did his homework as well as do my own. Then would have a nice hot meal for Dad for when he came home at 10:00pm - he went to see Mum everynight. I was doing all the housework as well. I was taking exams and swatting for them as well at the time. We worked it between us, and both of us my brother and I have been brought up to be pretty self-sufficient in many respects. We were very lucky. Doesn't matter really at the end of the day as long as you get through. Take care Tricia x
