An early start to the day

On our travels on a bright but cold frosty morning, with the mist swirling across the Fenland Landscape to reveal the ghosts of the "Windmills" all silent and looming all of a sudden into my field of vision.  The road because of the Fen is bumpy in places you would not expect to be, but it is what it is.  Its been like it for yonks and unlikely to be any different in the future, apart from perhaps a resurface here and there.

Saturday morning finds us on our way to Ramsey outside of Peterborough, to go to the small fresh fish stall that is there of a Saturday morning, and a veg stall.  In the summer there tend to be a couple of other stalls as well, but we like the trip out, even though it is a cold and early start to the day.

Today Moules have been obtained for Moules Mariniere for tea later on today to be served with crusty buns to mop up the juice.  A Crab each, and G has stocked up on his Cockles and Whelks.  Simple treats enough.  No full fish for us this week, maybe another week, maybe some smoked Haddock. We like our fresh fish.  The tradition of having fish particularly shell fish goes back years in G's family.  His Dad (known as Barley Meadows) who was a lovely old boy, used to go to the Market for most of his life and latterly the Meat and Fish market (the big market has since gone and the Fish and Meat market have been re-homed under the old Town Hall).   Then on to Tescos on a Friday in his later years.  Both his daughter and G and I used to benefit from these trips resulting what we referred to as the weekly "Red Cross" parcel.  Their way of helping us out with just a few little things.  When this first happened I was extremely embarrassed, but they would not take no for an answer.  Charlie and Jessie were a proper double act.  Charlie was taken from us far too soon and unexpectedly, leaving Mum on her own. After that she went into her own little world and left to be with Charlie some 13 weeks later. Both lovely people who I loved very much and miss a lot.

The veg stall also had plenty of goodies. I have come away with veggies for a stew including Turnip, Swede, Sweet Potato, Squash, Cabbage, tomatoes, apples and more.  Some of the stuff will find its way into the freezer some will be kept out to use fresh.  I prefer to shop this way, it is so much more of a genuine inter-action with people, who you gradually get to know a bit more each time you go.  Less hurried and least stressful way to shop.

A quick stop over at Peter's Bakery in Old Fletton, Peterborough for some crusty rolls, and that is the meals all sorted for today.

Now back to the house for a mug of steaming creamy coffee and a bit of breakfast that should set us up for the rest of the day.

Now off to potter.

Have a lovely day.

Catch you soon.
