Topping up a little

I have been busy in the kitchen again, but I have also been topping up on food items as well.  Therefore a little trip around the corner from where I live to my local Asian shop.   I managed to find Glucose powder which I need for some of my preserving, but it is also a good alternative to sugar.  We used to have it sprinkled on our cereal as children and I have been looking for it for ages.  It was usually dished out as a boost after we had been unwell. Two boxes have therefore come home with me. We used to get it from Boots, but I have checked online and they were not showing that they supplied it.  They used to have a corner of the shop where they sold things like this including proper soap flakes etc.  Times have moved on eh, and I am not sure they are for the good.  I am grateful though to be able to find those difficult to find items at my local shop.

Also bought some baking yeast sachets for the bread maker, two packages of Gelatine, some more golden sultanas, a couple of packs of dried pumpkin soup mix, Coconut powder (for adding to milk shakes etc.) Garlic powder, onion powder, fennel seeds, coriander ground, strawberry jelly crystals, citric acid, 2 packs of Jasmine candles, and some red chillies.

All are little bits that top up when bought together, but I should not need to buy these for a little while now.

After coming home, there are still a few bits that I have thought of in retrospect.  Need some Coconut Oil, Rose Water and some Almond oil and some Jalapenos.

I still need to go back a little later on as I want some potatoes and also some onions.  I have since been back and bought two bags of potatoes one of reds and one of whites, and two large nets of onions.  So the basics have been stocked up as I use a lot of these veggies.

G has also been to the Butchers and has come back with a tray of eggs, a Lamb joint for Sunday dinner, some back bacon, two small quiches, lots of sausages, a pork pie.  So tea tonight is to be a pick n mix the quiches, pork pie, cheese, some charcuterie meats, pickles and chutney.  As much or as little as we want.  There is a bottle of cider for G in any event.

I also had been to the local supermarket and managed to find a chicken (for Ā£2.10), 6 bags of reduced veg 60p per bag, three punnets of plums, two punnets of blueberries intend to make some blueberry muffins and some raspberries ditto, two trays of pineapple, two small trays of little plum tomatoes, one tray of water melon slices, 2 trays of mushrooms, 2 bags of new potatoes, 2 broccoli heads, one cauliflower, salad bowl, 8 limes, coleslaw and large and small wraps. I also bought four Butternut squash, three Red cabbage.  The Butternut Squash is being used in the Piccalilli recipe.  I will also be making a batch of pickled red cabbage. The potatoes I bought from the Asian shop are nice big ones and ideal for baking.  I like them filled with butter cheese and Coleslaw.

I still need to top up on dairy things like my Actimel shots, some natural yogurt for a live starter to make more of my own, Creme Fraiche, Clotted cream, Mascarpone and some double cream.  I will probably nip to Waitrose to top up tomorrow for this and maybe some more veg to give a bit of variety during the week.

All the mixed veggies are being turned into Piccalilli for G so that he has something to slap on his cheese in a bun.  Well that is the plan in any event.  Next time I will probably make some mixed veg soup and then heat process it.  The recipe for the Piccalilli is here:

Spicy Piccalilli Recipe

There is a lot to do and I am also trying to use ingredients up that I have in-house too so that I get the maximum benefit out of them.

There is plenty to keep me out of mischief or get me into it in any event.  At least some work took place in the kitchen.  Will be back to it again tomorrow.

Have a lovely evening.

Catch you soon.

This is the recipe that I like.  I think this is more of a "lady's recipe" as it has the sweetness from the stem ginger.

  1. I am definitely going to try that recipe - I think the only item I'm missing is the ginger. I've also been stocking up on veg over the past two days. Yesterday I went to church, then voted in the advance poll for our upcoming federal election (there were huge lineups but I lucked out twice and was only in line for half an hour) - then I stopped at a fruit & veg mart that I like and where I get my eggs - bought two dozen, peppers, salad greens and bananas. Up and out early this morning for tomatoes, mushrooms., avocado, potatoes, sweet potatoes, grapes and plums. I will be doing a lot of vegetable prep a little later. I cooked up mince (kept some out for spaghetti sauce) and I've put the rest into the freezer for future use. Then I cooked up some sausage meat, mixed it with some dried turkey stiffing and it is now in the fridge. A little later I will make up stuffing balls for the freezer.

I did forget to get some lids and screw tops as extras for pantry jars so will have to stop by on Monday. My big task for the weekend is to put together two Raskog carts from IKEA. I have one that I use as a bar cart and these two are going in the kitchen as I reorganize some things. Next week I will order two more as I want to use them in my pantry - need to make a few things more accessible in there.

I have some chicken to cook after church tomorrow and then on Monday I plan on a big bowl of fresh pasta. I gave up pasta for Lent so I am looking forward to a couple of big bowls next week! :- ) Have a lovely Easter - hope its not too busy a day for you.
