Well that was a shock. Plants delivered this morning (Wednesday). Looks as though I have a lot of work to do this week in the garden.
On the Seed Front I have sown:
3 Packets of Spencer Sweet peas
3 packets of Nasturtiums
I have no end of potting on to do now that the compost has been delivered but I have not been able to deal with the potting on as it has been chucking it down with rain. Will do the soil good and maybe I will be able to tackle the digging a bit better now that the earth is well wet.
I have also placed another order for more plants. Think this will be the last one for this year for plants in any event. Will see how things go. Trying to get a Winter Veg garden underway as best I can so that we have some resources available in the winter months to eat fresh as well as being able to access other preserves and some frozen veggies.
I have also ordered the following ancillary to the seeds I also have on the go. Some of them have been ordered as a knee jerk reaction because some of the seeds seem to be taking their time.
Dwarf French Bean Tendergreen 10 plug plants
Cobra French Climbing Bean 10 plug plants
Blue Lake French Climbing Bean 10 plug plants
Broad Bean Aquadulce 10 plug plants
Bulb Fennel Zefo Fina 10 plug plants

Mangetout Carouby de Mausanne 10 plants
This morning I also received my Kitchen Garden Subscription for June with three packs of seed i.e. Spinach. Spring Onions and Radishes. There are lots of ideas in here that I want to turn my hand to both on the growing front and on the cooking and preserving front, including making dried herbed courgette "pasta" from pureed courgette, dried green powders, Bouillon, Pickled Courgettes. Lots of good eating and goodness. I particularly want to have a go at making a couple of homemade Lettuce Buckets. I have two in the garden, might need some help with making the potting stations in the buckets themselves but it makes sense to grow some lettuce leave in this way.
I have also ordered some 5 gallon potato bags for some potatoes or other veg as well. There should be 12 of these to come. They should be here by Saturday. If they are okay when they arrive I may order some more of these
So lots going on just need to be able to get stuck in. At the time of updating this post, the rain has stopped and there is some Sun in the sky albeit clouds keep coming by.
I also need to get some cuttings taken of the grape vine and the wild blackberries in the garden. I would like a fruit growing area again for next year and as the Blackberries are really good seems a pity to waste them. It is just I do not have the room for them this year, but starting cuttings off that is an investment in the future. The grape vine has lots of little bunches of grapes on it already. The Fig trees were potted up the other day, and I am thinking of buying in a couple more as I absolutely love fresh Figs. The plants are small and there will be no fruit from them this year, but they are good little plants and it will be good to have them fresh from the garden. Not only the fruits but the leaves can be used in cooking and preserving as can the grape vine leaves.
I did go into the Greenhouse to check on things today (Wednesday) and everything seems to be doing well. There are tiny Cucumbers on the Cucumber Plant and Courgettes starting to form on the Courgettes. Plenty of Cherry tomatoes and Chilli Peppers too. I have lots of Tomato plants and Chilli Plants.
My goodness - it sounds as though you've got a small farm on the go! That will be a lot of work - plus all the preserving to come! I hope that you manage a few "down days" to recover so that you can continue to enjoy the garden and not be too exhausted. Can't wait to see some photos once everything starts to grow!
ReplyDeleteHi Margie, I am trying to cover all bases, provide ingredients for preserving. I have baby cucumbers so Bread and Butter Pickle is on the agenda if I grow enough. I am thinking of buying in another Cucumber plant to make absolutely sure. I need for fresh eating as well. Also have some Cucamelon Plants (three) and yet again looking to make preserves/pickles from hence me going a bit OTT. Did not grow anything last year and I missed it. I also bought some old fashioned Pinks (four plants) today for eventually cut flowers. Next year I would love to do a proper Cut Flower Garden. Will see how things go. Also want to do some hanging baskets and some planters. I have seen two hanging baskets that I would quite like. Will have a look next time I go to the shop to see if they still have or still have similar to pretty things up a bit. Regularly used to do a lot quite a few years ago. My Grandparents were Gardeners as were my Mum and Dad. I am still learning on some things. Have the Cucamelons which Have not grown before and also Artichokes. Not sure about these at all but we will see. I had not grown Chillies until the other year. Have loads of them as well. G likes Chillies. I really enjoy the gardening it is hard work but will be worth it overall. I relax when I am my own little space pottering. I have lots of brassicas, pumpkins, squash, Pattypan squash, celeriac, leeks etc. to pot up as well as beans and more tomatoes. I have been hanging my nose over some Mushrooms though. Really I do not have the proper set up with the growing houses/greenhouses but I am making the best of what I have. I am trying to pace myself. Will have an early night tonight as it will be another full on busy day tomorrow. You take care too and I hope your Pantry gathering is paying dividends for you. Hugs Tricia x
