Gathering Things for Christmas Warmth and Comfort

Boughten Items

One of the things that I absolutely love to do in the Winter months is to cuddle up on the sofa and watch a film, keeping snug and warm - down time - relax time.  Over the years I have managed to gather together one or two throws that only come out at Christmas or when the weather really starts to get cold.  I have slowly been accumulating some extra ones as I have gone along.  Most of these are bought.

Handcrafted Items

However really and for my long term plans I hope to crochet a few to really make my home that bit more personal and warm and snug from a different perspective.  I may order in some wool in order that I can start creating a Christmas throw or two for Christmas next year.  Made up of squares so that I do not have too much weight to handle each time I do some work on the throw.

In any event, you will not be surprised that I also have a small collection of cushions as well, which are also only brought out at Christmas.  I have also seen a couple of more cushions that I would hope to add to the collection.

Recycling something from not wanted to wanted

This year, I have a couple of Woollen jumpers a red one, a green one and a cream one which I intend to turn into some cushion covers to inter-mingle with the Christmas Cushions I already have to hand. A little more honest and rustic I think they will go well with the cushions I have already collected and it is recycling something that would probably because of the damage to it be sent to landfill or the Rag company.  I will only be using the good bits from each jumper.

Embroidery Cross Stitch Lap Quilt

I also have an unfinished UFO, what I hope will be an heirloom in that I am working in cross stitch a quilt panel with seasonal Christmas scenes and objects on it.  I am hoping that when I get to sit in the front room and watch the TV on a Sunday afternoon as I am planning to do during the Winter months and in the run up to Christmas that I will be able to do more work on this. Probably inter-spaced with another UFO, or indeed one of the many of smaller projects I have which remain unfinished.  Embroidery is best achieved in daylight, although with the aid of my lamp I am also able to work of an evening, it does however sometimes put a little strain on my eyes.  We will see how things go.  Once the embroidery is completed then it will be time to make up and finish the quilt itself.  It is a lap quilt.

Once the embroidery is finished (cross stitch) I will then need to source appropriate Christmas patchwork fabric and batting to finish this off.

Future Plans

In the future I am keen to make some full size Christmas quilts in any event however I need to up my practical patchwork skills first which I intend to do when my sewing machine foot pedal comes to light. Hopefully that will be soon.  I already have Christmas jelly rolls and also Christmas fabric for making some Christmas quilts which I intend to start with and then once they have been made (I have enough for two Quilts).  I may also progress with having a go at a Christmas tree Quilt as well. I attach a link to free Christmas Tree Quilt patterns - there is a huge choice available and I do hope to have a go.

However will need to source some suitable different green colours first to have a go at this.  So we shall see what happens in due course.  I am keen to have a go at this.

Being comfortable during the cooler months is for me a requisite of cosy living.  Cosy things help you relax and not only afford physical comfort but warmth as well.  A win-win as far as I am concerned.

How do you plan to bring Warmth and Comfort into your home this Christmas season and/or through the Winter months.  Are you making your own quilts or crochet blankets or are you doing something else.  Would love to hear from you.

Catch you soon.

  1. Perhaps you could buy a replacement foot pedal for your sewing machine? It is a shame you have lost it and so can't do any machine sewing. I have lots of hand sewing to do but my shoulder is stopping me doing any at the present. I have another quilt on the go, but won't be going to my class for a while either for the same reason.

    1. Hi BB, not possible at the moment but it is something have considered. I sympathise with the shoulder issues. I have Rotator Cuff issues on both arms. Right shoulder is the one that is completely shot. Have ruptured the tendons. Have to do exercises every day to keep things going. Have found that the colder weather really does affect so tend to have lots of layers on. I think the heat pad or hot water bottle will be coming out. I am sorry about not getting to your class as I know how much you enjoy that. Take care Tricia xx
