Wednesday Roundup 11 November 2020

Today would have been my Granddad's birthday (known in the family affectionately as Pop).  He was born on 11 November 1900. So  this date has always had a different connotation for me. It is also Armistice day, the true date of Remembrance Day.  Pop was a "gentle man", not easily roused to temper, so on the very rare occasions he did get upset it sent shockwaves out to those immediately surrounding him.  He was also modest and very hardworking, working for the same company for 56 years a company in Lincoln called Ruston Bucyrus (Latterly called Rustons and I believe the company has now been amalgamated into Siemens although not sure of this.  He was an Engineer Fitter when he joined the company, training quite a few members who eventually went on to be Directors of the company.  He was an Engineer Fitter when he retired.

Indeed, a friend we made in Peterborough (who it turns out came from Lincoln) knew both my Pop and my other Granddad who he used to play Darts with.  My Pop had trained him at one point and the other granddad he used to socialise with. What are the odds of that happening.

I predominantly think of Pop at this time of year as this is when he used to go to work as Santa Clause at the Mawer and Collingham store in Lincoln.  He was really good with children. He did this for several years until he started reading in the press that older gentleman were getting confused and going out of shops with goods in their hands unintentionally.  It worried him to the extent that this would have mortified him and so he handed in his notice which was a shame, but knowing and understanding him as I did, I can understand why.

Last night I managed to play catch up on the crochet.  I have now worked 20 squares.  I have the centres for the next 10  centres to work tonight,  In all I am looking to work 60 squares for the blanket.  However, for a change and to get another project progressed with a bit more I shall be working on my Christmas cushion. No embroidery yet, just getting the pattern transferred and also my cloth on the level. The magazine that I got this design from also has some other lovely patchwork projects in which I would not mind a go at either. Will have to see what I can do in the New Year ready for next Christmas.

Today I have been pottering away in the dining room again.  Slow work but will be a job well done.  Still finding loads of stuff.  Concentrating on washing all the vases on the top of the dresser this evening and getting them put back.

Also managed to get a Dishwasher sorted out.  Phew.  That should be arriving on Saturday.  I use it a lot for sterilising my jars and bottles for preserving, although do occasionally use the older traditional methods.  I also of course use it for washing up.  If my hands are in water for too long it causes problems with my joints.  OH is shy of the tea towel and I cannot do everything so something has to give somewhere along the line.  So slowly getting there on the appliances front.  Still have some more to source and some other non-electrical items but feel as though this is gradually being brought under control.  Fridge Freezer will arrive next week.

Had to nip to the shop for some cleaning stuff and whilst there came across some plants that had been reduced.  A Christmas Cacti to go with those I already have and a Cyclamen both reduced to £1.50 and a very small spider plant for 75p.  They are in the bathroom at the moment as this is the coolest room in the in the house. I am going to have to re-pot the spider plant into a bigger pot.  I also have some leaves from my previous two Christmas Cacti that I bought the other week which I am going to try and start off new plants with.  I have one of each colour.

I have some new planters that have never been used in cream which will be ideal for arranging these in for Christmas.

I would also quite like to get a couple of air plants for the bathroom and some ferns just to liven it up a little bit.  Will have to see what I can find.  Fingers crossed.

I would quite have liked to have got some paper whites and some hyacinths planted, but I think I am a little too late for this year.  This is going to have to go on the to do list for next year.  That means I will have to look out for suitable planters to put the into throughout next year.  So that is another little project going forward.

I checked on my liqueur type drinks today and they are coming along very nicely.  The colours are very vibrant on all three of them so am very pleased about this. Just have to add a little more sugar.

Right upwards and onwards.

Catch you soon.
