Back to Real Life and another Pantry visit

Sunday

Frost is predicted roughly for the next week and after all my hard work with the greenhouse and the way the plants I have bought in have grown I do not want anything to happen to them.  I have therefore been and put the greenhouses to bed tonight with some fleece, newspaper and bin bags to try and give the plants some protection.  I shall uncover them again in the morning and may water them then if they need it.  However of an evening if there is going to be a frost, I do not want to water them for them only to freeze.  According to the forecast it looks as though we have a week of this before temperatures start climbing again.

I also realise that I have not been putting up much about what have been up to on the food front for a little while.

Outline Plans for this week include and not in any particular order the following:

  • A Lasagna to be served with Garlic Bread and a mixed salad;
  • A piece of Venison.  Not cooked this before so a first for me.  It is going to be served with some seasonal and not so seasonal veggies.  I obtained PSB from the Farm as well as the meat yesterday, also Leeks and Broccoli, Cauliflower and Carrots. I have some swede in the freezer and so might make a carrot and swede mash.  I shall probably do some roasted onion and roast potatoes to accompany and I might make a Yorkshire pudding.
  • I managed to pick up four double Lamb steaks as well which are also on the meal plan for this week (if I change my mind they will go into the freezer.  Will just serve peas, cauliflower, carrots and some mashed potato.
  • A Cauliflower and PSB cheese; a good accompanying dish for a main meal, however it is equally gorgeous served for tea as a meal on its own with some crusty bread and a glass of wine.
  • There are also Sausages and I am thinking of making a Toad in the Hole as well.  An old favourite here.
  • There will of course be the breakfasts as well during the course of the week for G and I have yogurt to make as I tend to have yogurt with my breakfast if I am having some form of cereal.
  • I am planning on making a bread loaf and some buns in the next couple of days or so.  Now I have found the bread flour, I can get on again.
  • I also plan on making some Flapjacks and some sponge cakes during the course of the week.  Need a little bit of sweetness and some Scones for G;
Monday

I have also been back into the Pantry and associated boxes.  I have managed to clear two large tubs of stuff and there are two more to go.  Not sure where all this is going to go but as I have said still have the under-stair cupboard.  Have also been clearing stuff from the bathroom and also the kitchen.  Shall continue on with until finished that is the only way I will stand a chance of getting everything sorted.

In the interim we needed a few bits from the supermarket so G took me in the car to Ms.  They had a nice selection of plants on the way in may go back another day.  Got what we went for and then on the way back G took me to B & Q and bought me a couple of more plants.  Another of the Tomato plants like we bought the other day and a Cucumber.  Will probably go back another day and have a look as I have some money for plants and my birthday money put to one side and there are a couple of plants I am after.  That is therefore a trip for another day.

The plants were protected pretty well last night with the fleece etc. and no side effects.  I will need to cover up again tonight and make sure to add extra covering in for the Cucumber and the new Tomato plant.  By the way a couple of the Cherry tomatoes were ripe.  They were absolutely delicious.

We are having a pick n mix tea tonight.  Have some nice Beef slices and some pate, cheese, biscuits and bread.  We have  fruit tart each for pudding.

I have kind of fizzled out a bit since we got back home. I think all my efforts the other day have caught up with me and this cold snap of weather we are having has stiffened me up a bit as well causing discomfort. I have to go out to sort the greenhouse.  I did water and feed the plants this morning so that they had chance to dry out a bit before evening.  Not that I gave them a lot to drink in any event.  Do not want them freezing.  It is supposed to go down to 4 degrees tonight and 3 degrees tomorrow night. So I am mindful I have to nurse the plants through this.

I have therefore now put my feet up for the evening.  It was an early start at 5:00am due to a Jack Russell and I could not get back to sleep.  Ended up on my phone at one point checking the Internet.  Eventually got up at 7:00am.  So a tiny bit cream crackered.  Tomorrow is another day as they say.

Have a lovely evening everyone.

Catch you soon.

  1. I have had a very busy week plus at the office and at home so just catching up on your posts from the last few days. A very happy belated birthday - and enjoy your "dress allowance"!
    You have made great progress in the garden and in the pantry - but it is rather never ending isn't it? I too have been back and forth between my pantry and my kitchen rearranging things - to make some small appliances more accessible and to ensure that I am rotating through my pantry stockpile so that nothing goes to waste! I am pleased with the results and intend to give myself a few days off now that I have done a good bit of Spring Cleaning! There is always more to be done but I am going to take a couple of days off!
