A Little more on the Gardening front
I have a simple outline so far this year for the garden. I am determined to get some things sown, grown and planted even though I do not feasibly know whether will be here to garden or not. Depends whether we can get down to Cornwall. Fingers crossed I am very much hoping we will do. However, equally I do not want to miss out on some home grown items either, especially when it comes to the salad items, the Beans and everything else
I have been reading a lot recently about people's approach to gardening and what people have planted in the past from what I can ascertain there are a few items that traditionally will help top up the food pile a bit. They consist of the following:
- Spring Onions
- Radishes
- Beetroot
- Turnips
- Swedes
- Parsnips
- Leeks
- Kale
- Cottagers/Keepers Kale
- Savoy Cabbage
- Brussel Sprouts
- Mustard Greens
- PSB
- Broccoli
- Broad Beans
- French Beans
- Borlotti Beans
- Runner Beans
- Peas
- Mangetout
- Marrows
- Courgettes
- Cucumbers
- Carrots
- Potatoes
- Tomatoes
- Lettuce/Mixed Leaves
- Chinese Cabbage
- Beetroot
- Spinach
- Perpetual Spinach
- Rhubarb
- Spring Cabbage
- Summer Cabbage
- Winter Cabbage
- Cauliflower
I have already been through some of my seeds and pulled some of them from the list above and popped them to one side although I do not think that I have all of them. at the moment, However I do need to check out the rest of my seeds. I am therefore starting to prepare for sowing in my own way. Ideally I could do with a heated propagator. One day perhaps. It would help so much.
To add to the salad potatoes and the main crop potatoes I picked up the other day as well as the onions, I have also ordered 6 Blueberry Bushes today (6 plants for £16.99 for the six however that is because of the size of the plant). It is the cheapest that I have seen them so far and these will need to be grown on for a year or two before fruiting. There are different options and the link is here:
I intend to grow these in large planters to start with and need to buy in some Ericaceous Compost as they prefer an acid soil and we have clay! Hence the Planters to start with.
I have also bought some Trailing Fuschias (10 of them), yet again from Thompson & Morgan.
The link is here:
I want to do my own Hanging baskets and containers again this year. If I need to get any more of the Fuschias I can send for different varieties to compliment the ones already sourced.
I have also bought two strips of Violas and two strips of Pansies. I would like to get some more of the Violas for use in cooking and decorating cakes but also for flower pressing.
I also intend to send for two more Fig trees this year if I can. The ones I sent for last year and grew on from small plants are doing very nicely and I am hoping that we may get a crop this year
I already have a Grape vine in the garden but may look out for another vine for the opposite side of the garden to give a different variety.
I also quite would like a couple of Kiwi fruits.
I would also like to replace the lost fruit trees that were killed off whilst we were away about three years ago and will keep my eye open for those when I find offers yet again.
Eventually I would like to get more cane fruit as well. I particularly love cane fruits like Raspberries, Tayberries and Loganberries. I also like the Strawberries and the currants too. I already have a Rhubarb plant. Next year it will need splitting though.
Now to start the seed sowing.
Catch you soon.
