An impromptu visit to Iceland The Warehouse

I was up with the Lark this morning. A little chilly still, but the Sun was trying to peep out I had set my alarm for 8:00am but was awake a good hour and a half before then, so I got up and started to potter after I had my first mug of tea and my medication.

We needed a few things on the shopping front.  Some milk, and Bacon, so we went to Iceland.  Whilst there I spotted a few things extra that we use and which were a good price.  Not strictly necessary mostly things we use, but I tend to buy a few of them only when they are on offer.  We did not go to the Butcher this time for the Bacon, but will go again shortly.  I have yet to pack the bacon into its box and segregate it with greaseproof.  I bought a box last month to store it in the fridge.  He soon goes through a pack of bacon.  I occasionally use it for other dishes, but predominantly it gets used for his breakfasts.

Talking of Breakfast, the other day when I nipped to Waitrose I went in for some cereal.  I took one look at the prices though and decided not to buy any.  I thought that I might make some Granola and Muesli as I have the ingredients in the Pantry.  The prices were a lot better in Iceland and so we also collected some cereal as there were some bulk deals on a lot of cereals available; apart from the really large boxes.  These were still a good price though.  If you bought two you got the third one free. I am particularly fond of the Jordan's breakfast cereals.  I did not see any at Iceland, however I have seen them at Iceland before.  I have therefore potentially stocked up on cereal for the next couple of months. That is without the Porridge oats, homemade Granola and Muesli.  Iceland also have a fruit juice mixture in the cold fridges for £1.25 for a large bottle.  Flavours range from Mango and Passionfruit, Pineapple and Coconut, Strawberry and Lemon, Raspberry and Watermelon.  They have other flavours with them.   I tried the Mango and Passionfruit last time and really liked it  If you bought five bottles they cost £5.  It made quite a refreshing drink although it is not just orange juice and is not as concentrated.  We are drinking a lot more uncarbonated drinks these days and I often have a glass of juice or water with meals.

Also an offer on the mini Costa Coffee bottles five for £5.  I only ever buy these when on offer.  I recycle the bottles from these for preserving sauces or cordials as they are ideal in size so no wastage of the hard won cordial/sauce and the effort that goes into processing them..  Also came away with a couple of extra large bottles of Vimto Orange and mixed fruits cordials.  I also noticed good prices on 5kg bags of sugar for £4.75 (whereas the 1kg bags of sugar are 2 for £2 (i.e.  £1 per bag).  I think Home Bargains were 85p the last time I went in.  There are lots of offers on here at the moment.  Anchor spreadable Butter 400g is also on offer at £2.75 per pack.  Extra large Stork margarine for baking is about £4 a tub, but it is the mega sized tub.

Pleased with what we came away with and the offers on there at the moment.  Really a lot of good offers probably geared more to families, however if two or three persons went shopping together, (i.e. formed their own buying club for items on offer) then agreed which items they were going to purchase, split the items between them and then split the costs it might work out a bit cheaper on the items that are on offer.  It is just a thought.

Some good prices on tinned items, and meat and veg but prices have gone up to what they were, which is to be expected with the situation we have at the moment.

Some very good prices on the different freezer foods as well.  We bought for tea tonight a couple of Harry Ramsden's Battered Haddock and some mushy peas.  I will just cook some chips to go with that tonight.  G fancied the fish for tea.

However we have had some very interesting conversations the past few days.  He is going deaf and does not always hear what I have said properly, assumes he has and then goes on about something completely different.  For instance, he told me whilst we were obtaining pet supplies to get a couple of packs of a particular item.  I therefore did, and he said no I said a couple, and I had to point out that a couple meant two and that is what he had said.  He knew what he meant - not everyone else was clear on things though.

Now we are back home and I have everything packed away, it is now time to get back to the nitty gritty as it were.  I have told G that I will cook him his breakfast a little later on this morning after I have done a bit of work as I need to get on and make the most of the fact that I am up and about.

Sometime later after G got his breakfast and I had returned back to the work I needed to do....

Which was a lot later than anticipated I have started wading through a stack of things that need sorting out, either keeping, or taking to the CS.  It is time consuming, very slow but it will be worth it to get this all cleared.  May take me a while but it needs doing.  Need to sort this out so that I can get the new set up on the stone slab at the end of the Old Herb Garden sorted out for the kitchen waste bin and a bucket for condensed water for the greenhouse watering.  Then I will be able to sort the Old Herb Garden out, get the weeds out and tie in the grapevine.  Also sort out the other planters and get the soil roughed up a bit and dug.  When you look at it, does not seem like much, but when you get into it, it is another matter entirely.

I hope everyone else has been able to enjoy the beautiful weather today.  Supposed to be lovely again tomorrow.  Holiday weather!

Have a lovely evening everyone.

Catch you soon.

  1. Lovely weather here too. I meant to crack on with the garden, but still tired after yesterday and the rest of the busy weekend. The garden does normally take precedent at this time of year, as once everything takes off at the end of April, I don't stand a chance with the weeds and grass. The rest of the week looks set fair anyway. You found some good offers in Iceland. Our nearest one is Swansea, or perhaps Hereford. Both a long drive away .

  2. Trish, you need to be more forgiving of yourself. I know like me you have standards, but there are times when you need to slow down and take a breath. Just recently your body has been telling you its not happy and the shingles is the outcome......I had it years ago, I well remember what it was like, I had to listen and take a breath..........occasionally I get an itching sensation, I know I have to take a breath and slow down a bit.
I continue to look after DB, it does not get any easier, but that's life....moving was the best thing we did, we have so much more space and it's easier to get him round. He has carers in the morning and evening which is a great help.

    1. Thank you Anne. I normally have quite a high pain threshold but this has had me at the end of my tether. Worst part was that from about Tuesday night (not this week - week before) I started to have pain in my back and put it down to just a bad phase with my back as I have a disc out of alignment. Then things started to burn, but no rash was showing and I had G check me each day nothing. I was suspicious of it being the Shingles but as I had no real prior experience of it. Friday night after the Doctors had closed I was in real trouble and had started to itch. Later that night G checked me again and found the start of the rash under my arm. Things sort of went downhill after that. I have been good been taking it easy - I have had no choice but to. I have a whole raft of auto immune conditions and my body was very much fighting itself. I have had chills and fever and have been sleeping a lot. I have let my body do what it needs to do as I felt so weak. Monday I got to see the Nurse and she gave me the tablets and sorted out for me to have the Shingles first part jab on Monday coming. I was supposed to have the latest Covid jab imminently but she wants me protected by at least the first part of the Shingles jab, then I have to leave it for a few weeks before having the latest Covid one. As I have Raynauds it has also been difficult navigating the chills as when they have hit, it has triggered the Raynauds. Things are never straightforward. Fortunately now starting to get there and feel a bit more like me. Am still sleeping a lot and taking it steady. Following the method Mum used with us when we were kids that no matter what rest and sleep heals and promotes healing by allowing the body to do its own thing just very gently and at its own pace. I am grateful for all the support I have had over this. Because of the auto immune conditions I have been told that I could be prone to further episodes as you can have it more than once. I am therefore doing my best to not invite this horror back into my life, but you can only do so much. I am sorry for DB. It cannot be easy for him, but more for you as much of the onus falls to you. It is good to hear that your last move was the best for the pair of you. I am also glad that you have daily help for him. Much love to you both Hugs and thank you for caring Tricia xx
